I often introduce myself as a "recovering CPA."
I feel like that because after spending 4 years earning an undergraduate degree in Accounting from the University of South Carolina, and then spending another 2 years to obtain a Masters of Taxation, and then working as a CPA for over a decade preparing and filing taxes, I was burned out. Public accounting is tough and my respect for those professionals is immense. As my career progressed from working for someone else to owning my own practice, I noticed 2 really big problems continually facing business owners.
- Tax preparation is not tax planning! After-the-fact tax preparation - just processing a stack of receipts on April 15th and filling in the blanks on a tax return - is an incomplete service for most business owners.
- Business owners need help! There is wisdom in having many counselors to help navigate the ups and downs of business ownership - not just with financial issues, but also in relationship and leadership areas
I eventually realized that I could not address these 2 problems in a traditional accounting practice. So I sold my practice and TFL Worldwide was born.
